In the never-ending push for less invasive surgeries, lighting systems for better visualization have been largely overlooked. Crude fiberoptic tools have proved less than ideal when performing open surgery through small apertures that rely on direct visualization via the surgeon’s own sight. But now physicians have a new option for enhanced visualization: optical waveguide devices that transmit high-intensity, off-axis illumination into the desired surgical field using principles of internal reflection.
