Executive Summary
Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican, signs legislation June 8 banning gifts from medical device, drug and biologics manufacturers to physicians (1"The Gray Sheet" May 25, 2009). The law also requires manufacturers to annually report the "value, nature and purpose" of payments made to doctors and other health care practitioners for legitimate business purposes. The law takes effect July 1, requiring initial disclosures on Oct. 1, 2010. In Massachusetts, the first state in the nation to impose disclosure requirements on device manufacturers, companies have until July 1 to comply with regulations issued in March (2"The Gray Sheet" March 16, 2009)
