Executive Summary
According to a survey conducted by Nomura Research Institute, 51.1 percent of patients in Japan who wish to use generic drugs have not used them. Only 19 percent of surveyed have used generics and 12.4 percent expressed unwillingness to use the drugs. Among the 1,000 survey participants, 17.5 percent either have not heard of or do not know about generic drugs. Nomura noted that compared to Europe and the U.S. where more than 50 percent of patients have experience taking generic drugs, the Japanese generic drug market remains largely untapped.
