Retail Rx prices down
Executive Summary
Prescription drug prices fell .1% in May versus April prices, the first decline since a .4% drop in March 1973 as measured by the Consumer Price Index. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the CPI on June 12. BLS analysts attribute the May decrease to wider use of generic drugs and, in particular, note that some retail pharmacists are no longer stocking some higher-priced brandname products. May decline follows a cumulative increase of 3.2% for the first four months of 1992.
