MitraClip pioneer Ferolyn Powell dies in motorbike accident

Executive Summary

Ferolyn Powell, best known for leading MitraClip developer Evalve, has died in a motorbike accident while on holiday in Thailand. Ms Powell oversaw the development and commercialization of the transcatheter mitral valve repair device, used to minimally-invasively treat mitral valve regurgitation. Evalve, founded in 1999, was acquired by Abbott in in 2009 for $320m upfront and up to $90m in milestones. Ms Powell then joined Abbott as divisional vice-president and general manager of its newly-formed structural heart unit; MitraClip was approved by the US FDA in October 2013. It remains the only minimally-invasive therapy for mitral regurgitation in the US.
