The AED Plus and AED Pro automated external defibrillators, developed by Zoll Medical, are to go on sale in Japan. The Japanese Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) granted Zoll approval to import and distribute the devices yesterday. Zoll (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) is in negotiations with a major Japanese distributor over a deal to include multi-year minimum purchase commitments in exchange for exclusive distribution rights. Shipments of AED Plus are due to begin later this year. Sudden cardiac death is a major public health problem in Japan, with around 50,000 deaths annually; the Japanese AED market is worth approximately $200m.
