A novel approach to suturing could allow surgeons to make durable mitral valve replacements from patients' own heart tissue. The bileaflet reconstruction technique has been developed by Dr Radu Deac, a cardiac surgeon at the Tirgu Mures hospital in Romania, and is being tested in the US by Professor George Cooper of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.
