Executive Summary
Researchers at the Freiburg University ENT Clinic have developed a brain stem implant for those deaf patients who have auditory nerve damage and for whom a cochlear implant is therefore not indicated. This is the case in patients with bilateral acoustic neuromas secondary to neurofibromatosis type 2, who account for around 1.5% of the 80,000 deaf people in Germany.
