Executive Summary
Some two-and-a-half to three million Indians are HIV-positive, making India the Asian country with the highest infection rate. Although the Indian government had, until recently, denied the existence of an HIV problem in India, it has now developed a national AIDS prevention programme which is to be implemented in co-operation with UN agencies. The WHO estimates that, worldwide, there are 6,000 new cases of HIV infection each day and that 30 to 40 million people will be HIV-positive by the year 2000, of whom 90% will be in developing countries.
