Executive Summary
Of 19 Munich University Hospital patients who have received Baxter's Novacor wearable left ventricular assist system (LVAS) since 1992, 16 have survived to receive donor hearts, reports Arzte Zeitung. The newspaper reports that the longest period for which the pump was in use was 122 days. Munich heart surgeon Prof Bruno Reichart believes that the LVAS could, in fact, be used for a year or more and could even render heart transplants unnecessary in the near future.
