Half of all elective operations in England, or some 1.9 million procedures, are now performed on an outpatient basis, Lady Cumberlege, Parliamentary Secretary at the Department of Health, has revealed. Speaking at the annual conference of the British Association of Day Surgery in Eastbourne, she said today's rates compare with 34%, or fewer than 900,000 procedures five years ago.
