Executive Summary
Pfizer is to purchase privately-held Vesta Medical, developer of a system to treat menorrhagia. Terms were not disclosed. Vesta's procedure involves an inflatable balloon whose surface carries electrodes which, when inserted through a catheter into the uterus and inflated, electrosurgically removes the uterine lining. The treatment can be performed under local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis. Around one million women worldwide seek treatment for menorrhagia annually. Vesta's products will be manufactured and marketed by Valleylab, a subsidiary of Pfizer Hospital Products Group.
