Executive Summary
This article is based on a report produced by Brussels-based management consultancy Glover Leonard & Redshaw, which last year carried out extensive research on the Japanese in vitro diagnostic market. Clinical diagnostic testing in Japan is performed both by commercial and hospital laboratories. The commercial sector comprises some 850 labs, of which 400 have fewer than 10 employees and 350 have 10-49 employees. Around 35% of total commercial laboratory turnover - estimated at ¥50,000 million ($6,500 million) - is represented by the 12 largest labs (more than 200 employees), led by SRL, which has 10 subsidiaries and annual sales of some Yen57,000 million.
