Krankenkassen deficits reinforce urgency of German reforms

The German health insurance funds - Krankenkassen - recorded a deficit of DM2.5 billion ($1.4 billion) in the first quarter of 1997. DM2 billion was incurred by west Germany; the rest by the new Lander in the east. The deficit for the same period last year was DM3.5 billion, with a total deficit of DM6.3 billion for the full year.
