The medical device industry has outstripped pharmaceuticals in the number of foreign companies investing in China. The Chinese government's Third National Industry Survey shows there were 327 foreign-invested medical device enterprises in the country in 1995 with a total production output valued at $355 million. Pre-tax profits were $29 million on sales of $385 million. Joint venture companies producing finished pharmaceuticals numbered 237, although production totalled $841 million.
