Japan's Ministry of Health and Welfare is to join forces with a Tokyo think tank, the Institute of Health Economics and Policy, to examine the feasibility of introducing a diagnosis related group-based reimbursement system in Japanese hospitals. Japan's current system, which reimburses hospitals for each individual procedure, is widely blamed for escalating healthcare costs.
