Spectranetics has been awarded European approval to affix CE marking on its range of Laser Sheath devices for removing pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator leads. They work by using excimer laser energy to ablate scar tissue around the lead as the laser sheath passes over it. Spectranetics, based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, estimates that over 300,000 people undergo lead implantation each year in the US.
