Executive Summary
The Medical Industry Association of Australia is to co-sponsor a study which aims to improve the efficiency of the medical device supply chain to hospitals. A steering committee has been set up to oversee the study and take responsibility for getting suppliers, distributors and hospitals to co-operate, such as in providing cost data. The first objective will be to assess where the major inefficiencies lie. Once existing costs have been quantified, options for improving efficiency will be assessed. The study, which will also draw on overseas experience, is expected to be completed by early 1999 and the recommendations will be implemented through a series of pilot projects.
