The Canadian government plans to introduce mandatory filtering of all blood products by June 30 next year. This follows the decision in Canada earlier this year to implement filtering of all platelets prior to transfusion. Blood filtering using leucocyte reduction has been shown to reduce significantly the number of infectious agents in blood.
