St Jude Medical has CE-marked its Ventritex Profile MD implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The single-lead system is 11mm thin and 34 cm3, which makes it the world's smallest and thinnest ICD, according to the St Paul, Minnesota-based company. Designed for treating abnormally fast heart rates, the Profile MD has a maximum stored energy of 32 joules and is able to differentiate between ventricular and atrial tachyarrhythmias. The ICD was first implanted last month in a 60-year old patient in Germany.
