The University of California at Irvine will be the centre of a new five-year, $4.1 million initiative to research new laser based techniques for medical imaging and treatments. The university's Beckman Laser Institute will use the National Institutes of Health funding on projects including breast cancer, brain tumours, wounds, genetic disorders and immune diseases. The centre has already worked on laser-based imaging for breast cancer and laser assisted microsurgery.
