The UK Department of Health has formed a new HIV/AIDS expert group to work on targets to reduce mother-to-baby transmission of HIV. Data for 1997 show that a total of 250 pregnant women in England were known to be HIV infected. Undetected HIV infection in pregnant women is estimated to lead to 50 infected babies being born each year.
