Executive Summary
US scientists have identified a gene abnormality which could lead to an aggressive and deadly form of infant leukaemia. In a study involving 12 infants with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, the most common form of cancer in children, researchers found that leukaemic cells from all the patients showed a specific abnormality in a gene called Ikaros as well as high levels of defective forms of the Ikaros protein. The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (January 19).
