Medical device companies and members of Congress are up in arms over a Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) proposal to slash Medicare payments for new technologies used for hospital outpatients. HCFA disclosed on October 18 that it intends to cut the temporary "passthrough" payment for new devices, drugs and radiopharmaceuticals by some 50 %.
