Executive Summary
Scientists at Reykjavik, Iceland-based deCODE Genetics and psychiatrists from the Icelandic healthcare system have identified a gene linked to schizophrenia. The gene was detected as the result of a genome-wide screen involving 400 Icelandic schizophrenic patients and an equal number of their unaffected family members. Swiss company Roche, deCODE's main corporate partner, hopes to use the result to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools to combat the illness.
