Executive Summary
VisionCare Ophthalmic Technologies has begun a US clinical trial of its Implantable Miniturized Telescope (IMT) for treating dry or scar stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The device is implanted in one eye, which provides central vision, while the non-operated eye provides peripheral vision. Implantation of the device involves a 30-45 minute out-patient procedure under local anaesthesia. There are currently no treatments available to correct vision loss in patients with AMD, claims the Saratoga, California company. The device was CE-marked for sale in Europe last year but has not yet been launched.
