Executive Summary
China has officially become the 143rd member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), 15 years after it applied in 1986. One of the final stumbling blocks was removed when China reached a bilateral accord with Mexico earlier this month. Taiwan is to also join the WTO on January 1 2002, under the name of Chinese Taipei, after its accession terms were approved alongside those of China in November.
