Baxter begins to settle over dialyser deaths

Executive Summary
Baxter Healthcare is to pay Pta55 million ($293,000) to each of the families of 10 patients who died following haemodialysis sessions in two Spanish hospitals, in which the common link were its Althane dialysers. The out-of-court settlement is the first in what is set to be a string of lawsuits following last month's admission that a chemical - the perfluorohydrocarbon PF5070 - used in the manufacturing process of some of its Althane dialysers was the likely cause of several clusters of deaths in Europe, Asia and North and South America in recent months (see Clinica No 983, pp 1-2).
