Carl Zeiss and Asclepion bring together ophthalmology businesses to create new company

Carl Zeiss is to take a majority stake in fellow German company Asclepion-Meditec, which it will then merge into its own ophthalmic equipment division to form Carl Zeiss Meditec. The new Jena-based company will be a world market leader in systems for ophthalmology, the companies say. Shares in Asclepion leapt 47% to E12.20 ($11.60) on the news.
