The level of HIV-infection in Russia is likely to cross the one million threshold by the end of 2001, according to estimates released at a conference in St Petersburg last month. More than 55,000 new cases of AIDS were registered in January-August 2001. AIDS is spreading faster in Russia than in any other country, epidemiologists said at the conference.
