Wales is to spend £12 million ($17 million) on a drive to reduce its "completely unacceptable" waiting lists for orthopaedics services. Minister Jane Hutt has pledged to eliminate waits of over 18 months by August 2002. The Welsh Assembly intends to invest more in orthopaedics R&D through the Innovations in Care programme, from which £1 million of the latest funding comes; £6 million has been provided by the health authorities, while the remaining £5 million are being funded centrally.
