Executive Summary

The stem cell research issue has provoked differences of opinion have arisen between the Green (Bundnis90/Die Grunen) and Social democratic (SPD) coalition partners in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia (NRW). In light of NRW President Wolfgang Clement's support for the importing of embryonic stem cells from Israel (see Clinica No 962, p 5), a two hour meeting of the coalition partners in Dusseldorf was used as a forum to define the various positions.
