"If we are not at the forefront of bio- genetic and medical technology, then we will not be able to realise the full potential of our economy in the future." This was the opinion of the German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder in a speech given to the Catholic Academy in Berlin last week. The chancellor made it clear that gene technology was something that could be exploited for the benefit of all, but that, at the same time, politicians would be responsible for ensuring that it was not abused.
