Executive Summary
Guidant has invested an undisclosed amount in equity in Spiration, a Redmond, Washington-based firm that develops and manufactures medical devices to treat lung diseases. Spiration is developing two products: a minimally invasive intra-bronchial valve to reduce lung volume in emphysema patients; and the VALR Surgical System, an alternative to surgical stapling and buttressing designed to minimise tissue trauma, air leaks and bleeding in lung surgery. Spiration raised $22m in its most recent financing round in June. Guidant's investment was made by the group's Compass medical technology venture capital unit.
