Brian Duerden has been appointed director of the UK Public Health Laboratory Service, replacing Dr Diana Walford. Professor Duerden, a specialist in anaerobic microbiology from the University of Wales in Cardiff, has been deputy director and medical director of the service since 1995, and has held senior posts since 1991.
