Executive Summary
Alcon has reported healthy quarterly sales growth of its surgical products (up 6% to $371m), intraocular lenses (up 9% to $114m) and cataract and vitrectomy equipment and disposable products (up 8% to $86m). However, its refractive revenues plummeted by 33% to $16m - a slump prompted by adverse global economic conditions and "weak consumer confidence", says the company's president and CEO Tim Sear. Mr Sear maintained that the company's refractive sales, which currently account for less than 3% of total Alcon's sales, should resume a growth trend as the economy picks up.
