The UK's NHS Modernisation Agency has issued guidance aimed at improving the performance of operating theatres in elective and emergency surgery. The guidance, the result of research carried out at nine pilot sites since March 2001, also seeks to improve the quality of surgery, by reducing emergency surgery between midnight and 8am.
