Executive Summary
Cardiovascular disease incidence is constantly increasing in Morocco, a leading cardiologist said last week. Speaking at a conference marking the foundation of the "Big Heart" association, Professor Mohammed Arharbi, president of the Moroccan Society of Cardiology, said that this was because patients were unable to afford expensive medicines to combat the disease. Professor Arharbi added that each year some 3,500 neonates in Morocco were born with heart malformations and about 1,000 of these required operations. The "Big Heart" association has been set up by cardiologists and NGOs to support poor people suffering from cardiovascular diseases and to create public awareness of the disease by organising seminars and information campaigns.
