China could be leading the race to create the world's first stem cell lines, after reportedly succeeding in cloning human embryos and harvesting stem cells since 1999. According to the The Wall Street Journal, Professor Lu Guangxiu of Xiangya Medical College, in Changsa, claims that her team have been cloning human embryos for two years, with some 5% surviving long enough to allow stem cell harvesting. US researchers had claimed the world's first cloned embryo last year.
