Executive Summary
There is a renewed drive in France for screening for type 2 diabetes which, if caught early can prevent the onset of medical complications. It is estimated that of the 3 million diabetics in France, some 800,000 are unaware of their condition because of the lack of screening. Professor Philippe Passa of the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris is calling for all patients presenting with repeated infections to have a glycaemia test, and for all those over 40 with a family history of type 2 diabetes to be screened every other year, even though they have no symptoms. Capillary glycaemia testing should also be routine in workplace medicine, and followed up with a laboratory test where positive, Professor Passa recommends.
