Menorrhagia, prostatism, varicose veins and osteoarthritis of the hip and knee are the subject of guidance on referral from general to specialist services, issued recently by the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) for the National Health Service in England and Wales. Referral times are graded according to prognosis, with a maximum waiting time of two weeks for the most urgent category, subject to local management strategies.
