Executive Summary
Bayer HealthCare's diagnostics division has obtained an exclusive worldwide licence to Sontra Medical's non-invasive glucose monitoring technology. The Franklin, Massachusetts firm's SonoPrep system permeates skin ultrasonically to monitor glucose continuously. Bayer and Sontra also plan to jointly develop and commercialise a monitor incorporating ultrasonic permeation and biosensor technologies. Home glucose testing is a $5bn market. Sontra will receive a $1.5m licensing fee in January, plus potential milestones, royalties and a manufacturing supply contract.
