Executive Summary
TaKaRa Bio has begun to distribute in Japan the breakthrough PCR test for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), launched this week by German company artus (see Clinica No 1054, p 1). The news comes as Japan reported its first case, but the Hamburg molecular diagnostics manufacturer is pinning greater hope on the imminent reports of the performance of the test in some of the disease hotspots, notably Hong Kong, China and Canada.
