Executive Summary
General Electric's Medical Systems (GEMS) unit performed significantly better in the first quarter of 2003 than the group as a whole, which suffered in particular from a decline in gas turbine sales to the power industry. GEMS reported a 15% rise in revenues to $2.14bn. The segment's profit before interest, income tax and other financial charges also rose by 15%, to $306m.
