Jong Wook Lee has been nominated by the World Health Organization's executive board to succeed Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland as director-general. Dr Lee, who has worked at the WHO for 19 years, most notably as director of the Stop TB programme, is due to start the five-year term on July 21 2003, subject to the approval of the 56th World Health Assembly (Geneva, May 19-28).
