Executive Summary
The Italian health ministry has set up a committee on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with the primary aim of developing better diagnostic tests and promoting research to facilitate better understanding of this motor-neuron disease. More specifically, its remit is to establish the best diagnostic markers and gene therapy techniques. The project will also result in a widening of Italy's (autologous) stem cell research programme to five centres, says the health ministry.
