Executive Summary

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is to conduct a detailed assessment of the healthcare services and unmet needs of Puerto Rico. Under a technical co-operation agreement with its health ministry, PAHO will use the data to set out the country's healthcare development priorities. The information will also be used to help build a picture of the wider healthcare needs of the region. According to PAHO data, the principal cause of death among Puerto Rico's 3.8 million population is heart disease, at 139 per 100,000 inhabitants.
