Executive Summary
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has lifted all restrictions on Medicare's payments for higher-cost imaging agents that reduce some of the potential complications associated with using a contrast agent. Low osmolar contrast materials are non-ionic agents that pose less risk of flushing, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Although more expensive than other contrast materials, they have become standard practice among radiologists, the agency explained in announcing its rule change.
