Executive Summary
The Spanish nephrology association (SEN) has been commissioned to conduct a national study of the incidence and nature of chronic renal failure in the over 20-year age group. The study of some 8,400 subjects chosen randomly from each of Spain's 17 autonomous regions, will involve diagnostic testing, physical examinations and interviews on personal details and lifestyle. The data will be analysed by the health ministry's information institute and its results used to map the incidence of the disease, assess the risks of developing it and inform policy on prevention. "The study will provide epidemiological data of great interest that is currently lacking in Spain," said the health ministry.
