The World Health Organization has hosted a three-day consultation to determine what measures might prove effective in preventing the emergence of zoonoses - diseases that jump the animal-human barrier. The meeting of world experts took place at the WHO's Geneva headquarters on May 3-5 to look at ways of improving human disease surveillance, based on the experiences gleaned from the numerous outbreaks of zoonoses, including SARS, avian influenza, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Nipah virus.
